EDITOR POST
ICTSD is searching for an EDITOR to work on its Trade Negotiations Insights (TNI) periodical. Supporting the Editorial Team, he/she will ensure the very best journalism in the arena of issues related to Africa, sustainable development and trade, and will consistently produce high-quality material. This position requires at least three years of experience in journalism, plus a solid and proven understanding of African issues relating to world trade negotiations and sustainable development. He/she will proofread all contributions to the publication and write intelligent, well-researched, and impartial articles. He or she will also exhibit strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and an ability to coordinate production deadlines.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) is an independent non-profit and non-governmental organisation based in Geneva. Its mission is to influence the international trade system so that it advances the goal of sustainable development.

It achieves this through networking, dialogue and well-targeted research, and also through its publications. It now seeks to recruit a publications professional to fill the following position:

Position: Editor, TNI / Eclairage

ICTSD has built its reputation through publications that focus on the interface between trade and sustainable development.
Among them is the monthly publication Trade Negotiations Insights and its French sister publication Eclairage sur les Négociations, produced in collaboration with the European Centre for Development Policy Management, ECDPM.
TNI/Eclairage is a publication aimed at reaching out to stakeholders in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, keeping them up-to-date with relevant news in the bilateral and multilateral negotiating processes – notably in the context of the WTO and the negotiations of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) with the EU. The publication’s analytical content should enable readers to enhance their understanding of the coordination between these parallel negotiating arenas and help them to ensure negotiating outcomes that support sustainable development.
The TNI/Eclairage editor will oversee the strategic editorial orientation, production and dissemination of the publication in English and French.

Summary of main duties:
You will work as part of ICTSD’s publications team, in close collaboration with the programme teams and the ECDPM partners. Specific areas of responsibilities will include:

• Helping to define the publication’s strategic orientation and editorial line
• Managing both the editorial and physical production of TNI/Eclairage:
o Managing content, accuracy and consistency to advance ICTSD’s mission
o Developing the story list for each issue
o Commissioning and editing articles from external contributors
o Writing articles
o Working with an external graphic designer to coordinate the lay-out of the publication
o Overseeing the translation of articles into French and/or English
o Coordinating external printers.

• Implementing and developing an outreach and dissemination strategy for the publication, by taking responsibility for the mailing list and overseeing distributors’ work, plus carrying out web-posting.
• Liaising with ECDPM to ensure an effective input into the strategic direction, production and dissemination of the publication.
• Working in synchronisation with other ICTSD editors and programme managers to ensure TNI/Eclairage makes the best use of knowledge or content already in house, whilst promoting synergies between TNI/Eclairage and other in-house publications.
• As needed, liaising with donors and engaging in fundraising activities in close cooperation with ICTSD’s management

Requirements:
The candidate for this position should possess the following abilities:
• At least three years experience in managing a publication;
• A solid understanding of issues related to trade negotiations, especially EPA negotiations;
• Excellent journalism skills, including the ability to express complex concepts in a language accessible to non-specialist audiences and to come up with editorial story ideas.
• Perfect command of English and French;
• Excellent organisational skills, directing the work of different partners to meet tight deadlines;
• University degree in law, economics, journalism or equivalent experience that supports the ability to manage a publication;
• Ability to interact directly with staff and act as a problem solver;
• Ability to work independently and take initiative;
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment, with highly diverse external audiences and as part of a team.
• A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
