Public support is key to the development of new and sustainable sources of energy. Meanwhile, unsustainable energy forms are still benefiting from substantial subsidies. The legality of various forms of energy subsidies under the WTO is a matter of debate. ICTSD’s programme on trade and climate change is exploring these issues, as well as the potential for a future WTO agreement on energy.
